What are retractable key chains used for?
Most people use retractable key chains to hook up to a set of keys that they use frequently during the day. It’s easier to have a set of keys attached to this type of key chain for easy access than to have to get them out of your pocket.
Retractable key chains are also useful for badges and ID cards. Some offices require that one swipes a card for each door. The key chain device can hold the badge giving someone easy access.
Tools like pocketknives or multitools can also be hung from these type of devices.
What Features Should You Look For?
Look for the type of belt clip you desire. Some simply slide over the belt while others literally clip on to the belt. If using the retractable chain multiple times per day, look for a secure clip.
Some devices use plastic cable. This is fine is you rarely use the key chain. For those using these daily or multiple times per day metal chains and steel cable are best.
Some have both a key chain and a lanyard or badge holder. If you need one that works with your ID badge or name tag, be sure it has the badge holding feature.
Get the length that you need. Most retractable key chains have about 2 foot of length. Some of the cheaper ones only extend barely a foot so watch out.
Make sure you know how much weight the key chain can hold before it loosens up. If you have too much weight on the end, it will extend out when you don’t want it to. Cheaper versions tend to hold about 80 or 90 grams while the more heavy duty types can hold around 170 grams of weight.
